I did get the turnouts circuits switching on 5V (as seen on the video), but it wasn't 100% reliable, especially with the train operating, so I went back to the relays.
I'm currently setup on my mother-in-law's dinning table while they are away. 
Microcontrolling Turnouts
I think I've got the turnouts setup the way I wanted. I'm using Ken Stapleton's circuit, but have added a relay to isolate the 12V operating the turnout and the 5V the microcontroller is running on.
